Excitotoxicity describes a process by which nerve cells die after excessive stimulation. The accumulation of neurotransmitters in synapses is made responsible. Neurotransmitters such as glutamate can become toxic. As with any chemical compound toxicity is a matter of concentration.

The phenomenon of excitotoxicity proves the fauceir principle that every information exchange alters both sides the sender and the receiver.
